Welcome to Mrs. Sewade's Third Grade

In our classroom interactive, hands-on and technology enhanced lessons will encourage students to become active and engaged participants. Welcome to the third grade adventure!
The Sewade Journal
Each month I create a newsletter designed to inform my students and their parents of upcoming classroom and school activities. All the newsletters from this school year are listed below.
Jelly Bean Fractions
Students used jelly beans to learn about fractions. Students counted how may jelly beans in all - this was the "whole" or denominator. Then students sorted the jelly beans by color and created fractions for each color - how many "parts" (numerator) of the "whole" (denominator). Dividing the jelly beans in half and then eating them was the highlight of this activity!
Facts in a Flash!
Mrs. Armstrong's and Mrs. Sewade's third graders have been hard at work learning strategies to figure out their multiplication facts. Now they are using these skills to master their facts.
Mini Meteorologists
3rd Graders have been learning about Weather in Science. We've worked on cloud types, the water cycle, forecasting and weather instruments. The third graders made weather instruments: a rain gauge, an anemometer (to measure wind speed), a weather vane and a thermometer. We concluded our weather unit with a visit from WMUR meteorologist, Kevin Skarupa.
Because of Winn Dixie
Third Graders have been enjoying the novel, Because of Winn Dixie for the past several weeks. It is about a young girl named, India Opal and all of the adventures she has because of her dog, Winn Dixie. The story came to life on Friday, October 7th when the children were invited to Gloria Dump's backyard (the H.O. Smith playground) for a party. Invitations were sent to all the third graders to meet at the field where lights marked their path and streamers hung along side the pictures of dogs (dogs were the party's theme). The students shared sandwiches, pickles, Littmus Lozenges, and a great sense of community with each other.
