NECAP
Throughout the month of October, all third, fourth, and fifth-grade students at Dr. H.O. Smith schools participated in the statewide standardized test, the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP). The NECAP is the result of collaboration among New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont to build a set of assessments for grades 3 through 8 to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Our third and fourth graders completed two content area tests in math and reading. Our fifth-grade students completed three content area tests in math, reading, and writing. All of our students worked extremely hard over these very intense days and should be commended for their effort and focus.
Safety
Several safety drills were held during October in order to better prepare our students for emergency situations. We conducted evacuation drills and lock downs at both Library Street School and Dr. H.O. Smith School, as well as practiced bus evacuations.
Making a Difference
Throughout the month of October, food and household products are being collected to be given to Hudson’s local food pantry to help the families of both Hudson and Litchfield. This is an opportunity to give back to our local community and show the students that they can make a difference.
Zone A also participated in a clothing drive, sponsored by the Hudson Firefighters Relief Association for Colebrook, NH, which is an area that had fallen on hard times due to the poor economic conditions.
Blue Ribbon Award
On October 25th, the HOS/LSS PTO was invited to the annual Blue Ribbon Award breakfast in Manchester to be recognized for their accomplishments and participation over the past year. The Blue Ribbon Award is a prestigious honor that is awarded to schools who demonstrate outstanding volunteer service to the community. The number of hours of volunteer service is a key factor in earning this award. LSS and HOS have received this award for several years and we are pleased to again, be awarded with this achievement. Thank you to every person that attends Parent/Teacher Organization meetings, makes phone calls, participates in committee work, spends time baking and cooking, etc. Your effort and commitment are greatly appreciated by our staff, students and community.
Hazard House
Inspector Triolo of the Hudson Fire Department gave a presentation using the hazard house to students and teachers at Dr. H.O. Smith and Library Street Schools. The Hazard House is used to educate students as well as adults about common hazards and unsafe conditions that might be found in the home and how to correct them.
Bingo Night
What a night!! More than 200 parents, students, and siblings filled the gymnasium at Library Street School for dinner, bingo, and prizes! This family evening is just one of several hosted by the PTO of Dr. H.O. Smith and Library Street Schools as a means to strengthen and maintain our strong home/school connections.
Dominoes provided the pizza while the PTO provided drinks, dessert, and popcorn. Staff members participated in this evening by setting up, serving pizza, calling bingo numbers, verifying winners, overseeing prizes, and cleaning up. It certainly was an evening filled with family fun!
October Field Trips

Reading Corner
Both Library Street and Dr. H.O. Smith School will have the annual Scholastic Book Fairs. They take place in November and provide us with funds in which to buy books as incentives and materials for staff.
We are pleased to announce that enrichment ‘Book Clubs’ are starting up for students. Through these book groups, students will be talking about the books they read while choosing literature that is of interest to them, with a focus of promoting a love of reading.
Fall Enrichment Program
Our fall enrichment program started the week of October 11th. We currently have seven enrichment programs ranging from basketball fundamentals and cheerleading to Arts and Crafts. We are so excited that so many staff and families are participating in these enrichment opportunities.
Halloween Stroll
On October 29th, Library Street and Dr. H.O. Smith students will partake in our annual Halloween Stroll up and around School Street. This is a chance for our students to share their costumes with friends, staff, and the community. All parents have been invited to come and enjoy the wide range of creative costumes that our students proudly display.
